HARVEST FESTIVAL
67 x 67 cm - 26.4 x 26.4 inches with frame
This Batik was hand-drawn using an instrument called tjanting, in the village of Bakaran in Central Java, Indonesia.
The most traditional type of batik is called "Batik Tulis" (hand-drawn batik). The process of making batik tulis is complex and time consuming, and requires extreme delicacy and patience. It is different from mass-produced or printed batik fabric. Batik Tulis is truly special and one-of-a-kind and therefore is highly sought after by collectors.
The design was inspired by the rice farmers who each year celebrate the abundance of a harvest. Ceremonies are held to purge evil spirits from the land. The harvest festival is dedicated to the rice goddess and is a time of joyful celebration.
